Who is behind it
Biclay was founded by Sushant Daga. Before CiteOnly the work was consulting on applied machine learning: getting language-model products into production, cutting the cost and latency of systems already running, standing up self-hosted models where data could not leave the building, and helping teams build the tooling that gets an AI feature from specification to launch.
That work is where the problem came from. The same conversation kept recurring in different rooms. A team would have something working, and then somebody whose name went on the output would ask where a particular sentence came from, and there was no good answer. The usual response was another layer: a checker, a citation matcher, a set of guardrails. It made the system more complicated without making the answer any more defensible.
CiteOnly is a bet that the problem is in the wrong place. If a system cannot produce material that is not in your documents, there is no fabrication to detect, and the record of where an answer came from is not something you have to build alongside it.
On the name
CiteOnly is a plain description rather than a coinage. The system cites, and that is all it does. We spent a while looking for something more elegant and eventually concluded that a name you can spell after hearing it once, which says what the thing does, beats a distinctive one that needs explaining.
